Representation of inflected nouns in the internal lexicon.

چکیده
The lex ica1 representation of Serbo-Croatian nouns was investigated in a lexical decision task" Because Serbo-Croatian nouns are declined, a noun may appear in one of several grammatical cases distinguished by the inflectional morpheme affixed to the base form. The grammatical cases occur with different frequencies although some are visually and phonetically identical. When the frequencies of identical forms are compounded, the ordering of frequencies is not the same for masculine and feminine genders" These two genders are distinguished further by the fact that the base form for masculine nouns is an actual grammatical case, the nominative singular, whereas the base form for feminine nouns is an abstraction in that it cannot stand alone as an independent word. Exploiting these characteristics of the Serbo-Croatian language, we contrasted three views of how a noun is represented: ( 1) The independent entries hypothesis, which assumes an independent representation for each grammatical case reflecting its frequency of occurrence; (2) the derivational hypothesis, which assumes that only the base morpheme is stored with the individual cases derived from separately stored inflectional morphemes and rules for combination; and (3) the satell i te entries hypothesis t which assumes that all cases are individually represented with the nominative singular functioning as the nucleus and the embodiment of the noun's frequency and around which the other cases cluster uniformly" The evidence strongly favors the satellite entries s" Inflection is the major grammatical device of Serbo-Croatian, Yugoslav ia' s principal language" In general t the grammatical cases of nouns are formed by adding a suffix to a root morpheme where the suffix is of the vowel or vowel-consonant or vowel-consonant-vowel Less frequently t inflection involves additional processes such as vowel deletion and consonant palatal ization " The grammatical cases of Serbo-Croatian nouns produced by inflection are not equal in their fre y of occurrence" Table 1 summari zes the frequency anal s of Dj (1) on a corpus of approx two million SerboCroatian words appear the daily press and y" The nonNICHD HD-O to Haskins of Connecticut @ This research of [HASKINS LABORATORIES (1 ]

Processing of English inflectional morphology.
The present paper explores the representation of inflectional morphology in the English lexicon. There has been a long-standing debate about how these inflectional relationships might be involved during on-line processing. Inflected forms may be derived from an uninflected base form by rule application; by contrast, both regular and irregular inflection may be treated in the same way, with morp...

In this paper, the theoretical foundation, the way of implementation and the uses of Pars Morph, a Persian morphological analyzer is introduced. Pars Morph is a rule-based Persian morphological analysis system, which analyzes the internal structure of word in Persian and determines the grammatical category and function of the word parts. Pars Morph being in link with a lexicon covering about 45...
متن کاملGrammatical categories in the brain: the role of morphological structure.
The current study addresses the controversial issue of how different grammatical categories are neurally processed. Several lesion-deficit studies suggest that distinct neural substrates underlie the representation of nouns and verbs, with verb deficits associated with damage to left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) and noun deficits with damage to left temporal cortex. However, this view is not u...
متن کاملNeural processing of nouns and verbs: the role of inflectional morphology.
Dissociations of nouns and verbs following brain damage have been interpreted as evidence for distinct neural substrates underlying different aspects of the language system. Some neuroimaging studies have supported this claim by finding neural differentiation for nouns and verbs [Brain 122 (1999) 2337] while others have argued against neural specialisation [Brain 119 (1996) 159; Brain 124 (2001...
متن کاملLanguage Categories in the Brain: Fmri Studies of Noun and Verb Processing
How are words represented in the brain? Is lexical knowledge explicitly organised in terms of grammatical categories? Some neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies (Perani et al., 1999; Damasio et al, 1993) suggest that distinct neural substrates underlie the representation of nouns and verbs, with verbs being associated with LIFG and nouns with L temporal cortex. However, other studies argu...
متن کاملMultiword Lexical Acquisition And Dictionary Formalization
In this paper, we present the current state of development of a large-scale lexicon built at LabEL1 for Portuguese. We will concentrate on multiword expressions (MWE), particularly on multiword nouns, (i) illustrating their most relevant morphological features, and (ii) pointing out the methods and techniques adopted to generate the inflected forms from lemmas. Moreover, we describe a corpus-ba...
